The Transcontinental Railroad was very important to America's expansion because it made transportation to the West much easier, and less people were injured on the way there. Also, the winter season would normally be very difficult on the travelers, but, with the Transcontinental Railroad it would not be quite hard and you would not risk death quite so much.
